I Scream...YOU Scream...we ALL Scream for ICE CREAM!

NO-CHURN ICE CREAM KID PARTY (FROM STUFF YOU’VE GOT AROUND THE PANTRY!)

Okay, okay, I know the no-churn ice cream thing has been done before…however did you know you can make it from items in your pantry? And did you know that this is a SUPER FUN activity to do with your kids? So, let’s tackle the shelf-stable magic first.

MAKING IT FROM ITEMS IN YOUR PANTRY

The beauty of no-churn ice cream is that it calls for just 3 basic ingredients (sweetened condensed milk, whipped cream, and vanilla) and doesn’t need an ice cream maker to make it.  But if you’re like me, you don’t always have cream in the fridge or sweetened condensed milk in the pantry, which makes this simple recipe super annoying to make because if you have to make a trip to the store to buy ingredients for it, you might as well just buy some ice cream…ya know what I mean?

SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK

So here’s a quick trick for making your own sweetened condensed milk:

In a blender combine 1/2 cup very hot water, 1 cup powdered milk, 1 cup sugar and 1 Tbsp. butter.  You can use this homemade sweetened condensed milk in any recipe calling for  a 14 oz. can of sweetened condensed milk.

HEAVY WHIPPING CREAM:

Not a lot of people know the secret I’m about to let you in on…and that is there is heavy whipping cream that can sit on your shelf!  It’s made by Gossner’s (so if you’re in Utah, you can get it from their store or buy it online and have them ship it for a decent price), you can also buy it at Trader Joes (although, the price isn’t super great) and you can also buy it from a website called Diversified Foods (no affiliate here, it’s just the best price around).  When you do the math for the diversified food price ($42 for 12 quarts) it comes out to $1.99 for a pint.  I don’t know about your grocery store, but around me a pint of cream goes for $2.49…if I’m lucky.  But the best part is you can have cream on hand to make soups, whipped cream, or that ULTRA delicious Creamy Chipotle pasta from the Outsmart Dinner Meal Planner (if you’re from Arizona, it’s a 100% legit copycat recipe of Oregano’s Big Rig Pasta) whenever you need it. If you end up having some cream leftover you can make this ice cream (duh!) or you can freeze it for another day.

MAKE IT AN ICE CREAM PARTY

But honestly, my favorite way to do this party is to let my kids pick and create their own flavors to eat.  The only rule is they have to find the ingredients around the house!  For the live class, we made Leprechaun dream (mint ice cream with crushed Oreos and chocolate chips), Easter Eggstravaganza (chocolate ice cream with easter candy I bought last year), and cotton candy ice cream.  I also showed you the chocolate covered strawberry ice cream I made last night for myself….ha ha. So, if you’re making it for kids, double the recipe and split among 3 smaller bread pans (at least that’s what I do because I have 3 kids ;). (You can catch my LIVE meet up where I showed how to do it all in our Facebook Group HERE). It’s a great way to spend some time in the kitchen, get your kids creative juices going, and also prep them for ENJOYING cooking and create FUN memories with YOU! If you need any flavor inspirations, just do a quick goole search and you’ll find tons of different ideas to try.

NO-CHURN ICE CREAM

This is a great ice cream to make with kids or just to get creative and

Ingredients

  • 1 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk (1/2 cup very hot water + 1 cup sugar + 1 cup powdered milk + 1 Tbsp. butter, blend in blender)
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions

  • Beat cream in a chilled glass or metal bowl with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form.
  • Mix condensed milk and vanilla extract together in a bowl. Fold in whipped cream with a spatula until just combined. Pour into a freezer-safe container. Freeze until completely frozen, 5 to 8 hours.

Notes

When you're looking to get creative and make your own ice creams follow the general pattern above (add any extracts or flavorings...plann on 1-2 tsp of extract) to the sweetened condensed milk).  Add any mix-ins after you've combined the cream and sweetened condensed milk. Also, if you'd like to make a chocolate base ice cream, add 1/2 cup cocoa powder to the sweetened condensed milk.
