Want to make your own hamburger and hot dog buns (because they're about a billion times better), here's the easy way!

How to Shape Hamburger & Hot Dog Buns…the Easy Way!

Let’s talk for a quick second why you’d want to make your own hamburger and hot dog buns…because I totally get it…it feels like a lot of work when you can buy super cheap $0.89 cents.  AND…I’m totally with you.  I don’t always make my own hamburger and hot dog buns, but when I do, they’re about a billion times better. You see you can’t really compare these buns to the cheap-o buns because they don’t taste like them, however they do cost about the same amount of money.  So which would you choose? A super cheap bun or a delicious, soft homemade bun? Honestly, you’ll choose both at different times for different reasons and that’s okay.  But just know that these buns aren’t hard to make, so if it’s just fear of failure or of big messes, just know that it’s easy and simple to make. Plus, I’ll just throw it out there that when you make your own you can make the exact amount you want, whether you have a large family, or are empty-nesters and down to just the two of you.

START EARLIER

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you have to start dinner earlier in the day.  So when I’m planning on make homemade buns, I try NOT to make them just before dinner because there’s just too much going on. So I will make the dough and the buns in the morning when I have more time. I’ll just use my 30-minute dough recipe from the Outsmart Dinner Meal Planner because the dough is fool-proof, easy, and QUICK.

MAKE ONE, FREEZE ONE

You also know by now that one of the best strategies for having dinner make itself is to batch prep. So if you’re going to make these, double the recipe and freeze one of them.  All you need to do is shape the buns, place them on a greased or silicon mat lined baking sheet and put it in the freezer for 6-8 hours.  Then remove the buns to a ziplock bag and store in the freezer.  When it comes time to use them, pull them out at lunch to thaw and rise.  Then bake as directed.
